About Us

The Department as established in the late 1988 was known as “Department of Land Surveying and Photogrammetry”. It was initially operated at the Department of Civil Engineering in School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET), but was however relocated to the School of Environmental Technology (SET) as a Department in 1990.

The first set undergraduate students in Land Surveying and Photogrammetry were admitted in 1990. Due to changes and advances in Technology and modernization, the curriculum of surveying worldwide is changing to embrace the new technologies such as, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Land Information System (LIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Information Technology (IT). In view of this technological advancements, coupled with national and professional drive for self-reliance and global relevance, the nomenclature of the department was changed to Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics by the University in 2005.

The department has build its reputation through the great impact that its graduates have made in both public and private sectors of our economy and abroad. The department, presently has full SURCON and NUC accreditations.

On Saturday, 23rd October, 2010, it successfully carried out a maiden edition of the aerial Survey of Minna and Gidan-Kwano during the Survey Camping practical exercise, a feat which no Survey department in Africa has been able to perform. Since then, periodic flight manoeuvres have been taking place with our staff and students on board doing what they love and know how to do best.

 VISION
The Visions of the department are:
a. To Provide sound training to students in theory and practice of Surveying profession.
b. To train students in line with new trends in technology, etc., for example with shift to Geoinformatis so as to train our students to be sound in GIS, LIS, Remote Sensing or information Technology (IT).
c. To give our students an interdisciplinary background knowledge in the field of environmental technology.
d. To have enough qualified staff in order to run a successful and qualitative training programme; in this case the target is to have at least one lecturer in each of the specialized fields of Surveying.
e. To acquire the necessary modern equipment/instruments to train our students.
f. To consolidate on the gains of last full accreditation exercise by National University Commission.

MISSION
To provide the graduates of Surveying and Geoinformatics with the knowledge that would help them play a leading role in the social-economic and physical development of the country, by being versatile in providing spatial location of the Earth’s features and other environmental information necessary for designing and planning of engineering works as well as in the location and exploitation of natural resources, include GIS and land administration.
